Biographical background

Alisher Burkhanovich Usmanov graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR) with a degree in international law in 1976, and in 1997 he graduated from the Academy of Finance under the Government of Russian Federation with a degree in banking. He is fluent in English, French, Russian, and Uzbek.

Mr. Usmanov is a founder of USM Holdings, a diversified international company. The group’s assets include Metalloinvest, a leading supplier of iron ore products and hot briquetted iron in the global market; Baikal Mining Company, which owns the license to one of the world’s largest copper deposits in Russia; MegaFon, one of the Russia's largest mobile operators and a pioneer in 4G / LTE; Mail.Ru Group, an Internet market leader in the Russian segment.

USM Holdings also manages a number of dynamically developing assets in Russia and abroad. A.B. Usmanov owns the Kommersant publishing house. From 2007 to 2018, Mr. Usmanov was one of the main shareholders of Arsenal, an English football club.

A.B. Usmanov is a member of the governing bodies of NGOs and companies that play key roles in development of the Russian economy. Since 2006, he has been a member of the Board of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, and he makes a significant contribution to improving business environment and creating conditions for efficient development of the Russian economy. From February 2000 to October 2014, he served as the General Director of Gazprom Investholding, prior to that he was an Adviser to the Chairman of Gazprom and the First Deputy General Director of Gazprom Investholding. From 1994 to 1998, Alisher Usmanov headed Interfin Interbank Investment and Finance Company (ZAO “MIFK “Interfin”). From 1995 to 1997, he served as the First Deputy Chairman of MAPO-Bank, and from 1994 to 1995 he was an Adviser to the General Director of the Moscow Aircraft Production Association (MAPO). From 1990 to 1994, Mr. Usmanov worked as the Deputy General Director of Intercross JSC.

Alisher Usmanov is one of the most significant philanthropists in Russia.

Mr. Usmanov attaches great importance to charitable activities and is a member of the boards of trustees of a number of social, educational, and cultural organizations, including the Russian Geographical Society and the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO).

Mr. Usmanov pays special attention to development of sports in Russia and globally. For several years he has been heading the International Fencing Federation, he is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Fencing Federation, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Olympian Sportsmen Support Fund.

Since 2015, Mr. Usmanov has been a member of the International Olympic Committee's Olympic Channel Commission. He is also part of the Russian independent public anti-doping commission, established in 2016 at the initiative of Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation.

In 2013, Mr. Usmanov was awarded the Order for Service to the Fatherland IV class for his services to the state, as well as his active community and charitable activities. He was also awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky and the Order of Honour for his professional achievements and long-term contribution to business, as well as the Medal for Contribution to International Cooperation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and the Order of Friendship of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

In September 2008, the President of the Russian Federation awarded Mr. Usmanov with a Certificate of Merit for achievements in development of domestic industry and entrepreneurship.

In December 2009, the President of the Russian Federation awarded a commendation to A.B. Usmanov for his active participation in preparation and carrying out the First All-Russian Forum “Russia is a Sports Power”.

Alisher Usmanov was awarded Patron of the Year 2015 and 2017, the prize that was established by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.

In 2016, for his considerable philanthropic and societal contributions, Alisher Usmanov received the Distinction For a Good Deed, as well as the highest award of the Russian Council of Muftis, Order of Al Fakhr I class for strengthening mutual understanding between people of different nationalities.

In 2017, A.B. Usmanov received the Order For merits to the Italian Republic for projects on restoration of architectural and art monuments. The award was given by Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

In 2016, the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation, founded by Mr. Usmanov, received the highest award of the annual Golden Mask Award in the nomination For Support of Russian Theatre Art.

In 2017, the President of the Russian Federation announced the gratitude to the Foundation for active participation in implementation of significant projects, social and charitable activities, in particular, for carrying out the first surgery in Russia for implanting a retinal prosthesis to a blind patient.

In 2018, Alisher Usmanov was awarded the Order El Yurt Hurmati (National recognition and respect) for his great contribution to strengthening economic, social, cultural and humanitarian relations between Uzbekistan and the Russian Federation.

In November 2018, A.B. Usmanov received the highest award of the FICTS (International Federation of Sport Television) — Excellence Guirlande d'Honneur 2018.

Also in November 2018, President of the Russian Federation V.V. Putin awarded A.B. Usmanov the Order For Merit to the Fatherland, 3rd class, for his enormous contribution to development of Russian economy, culture and sports.
