Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation supports Mariinsky Theatre projects

27 January 2014

The Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation is a partner of the Mariinsky Theatre and supports many of its projects. Among them was the recent Mstislav Rostropovich Music Festival, which took place in Samara on 4-5 December 2013, as well as a concert by the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra directed by Valery Gergiev at the P.I. Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, on 25 December 2013.

The Mstislav Rostropovich Music festival is a festival dedicated to the memory of the great musician, known and much loved in the ancient Russian city of Samara. Mstislav Rostropovich loved Samara in return, and much of his creative life was connected with the city.

The Festival was held last year on 4 and 5 December. On the first day the Samara Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre performed P.I. Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta. Back in the day, the main part in this opera used to be sung by the great Galina Vishnevskaya, the wife and muse of Mstislav Rostropovich. This time, the title roles were given to the best voices in the Mariinsky Theatre. The opera performance also involved the choir of the Samara Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.

On the second day of the Festival the Symphony Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre, conducted by Valery Gergiev, accompanied two musicians celebrated for their uniqueness and dedication to the best traditions of Russian performance — violinist Alena Baeva and pianist Alexander Toradze.

With the support of the Foundation, on 5 December the Mariinsky Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the maestro Valery Gergiev, performed an early New Year’s concert in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall. The concert programme included works by two great Russian composers Dmitri Shostakovich and Pyotr Tchaikovsky: the famous scenes from Tchaikovsky’s operas Iolanta, Eugene Onegin and Mazepa, and Symphony N 4 of D. Shostakovich.

Among the events planned for 2014 with the support of the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation are the Moscow Easter Festival, the Mariinsky Ballet Festival, the Stars of the White Nights Festival, the Mstislav Rostropovich Music Festival, and others.
