Opening of International Year of Periodic Table of Chemical Elements in Paris

The Foundation was the general partner of the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements, which was opened on January 29, 2019 at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.


The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Mikhail Kotyukov, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev, President of the French Academy of Sciences Pierre Korvol, General Director of the UNESCO Audrey Azule, General Director of “Fosagro” Andrey Guriev.

More than 1,300 participants and guests from more than 80 countries of the world took part and were present at the opening ceremony. Among the speakers were world famous scientists and Nobel laureates such as Ben Feringa (Winner of Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2016), Sir Martin Polyakoff (Vice-President of the London Royal Society, author of the “Video on the Periodic Table”), Professor Yuriy Oganesyan (whose name was named the 118th element of the Table (“Oganesson”) and other representatives of the international scientific community.

As part of the opening ceremony at the UNESCO headquarters, the NAUKA 0+ All-Russian Science Festival presented a unique interactive exhibition devoted to chemistry and its modern achievements.

Each visitor of the exhibition could go on a trip to the science and see the history of the origin of chemical elements in the format of virtual reality, take part in experiments, scientific shows and much more.

In Russia, the opening ceremony of the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements will be held on February 6, 2019 in Moscow, at the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and will be timed to the Day of Russian Science and at the same time to the Birthday of Dmitry Mendeleyev.
