The play Two for the Seesaw (Dvoe na kachelyakh) returns to the repertoire of the Sovremennik Theatre

On July 24 and 25, in the Palace on the Yauza, the premier of the play Two for the Seesaw (Dvoe na kachelyakh) with a new performer in the lead role took place. For the first time actress and singer Kristina Orbakaite played on the stage of Sovremennik.

The play Two for the Seesaw is a landmark for the Sovremennik Theatre. Galina Volchek made her debut as a production director by staging this play 56 years ago in 1962. At the time it was a loud theatrical statement. Two for the Seesaw remained in the theatre’s repertoire for almost 30 years. The performers changed, but the audience interest in the play remained unchanged.

Three years ago, Galina Volchek turned to the play again, without regard to the previous production, and together with another team she composed a new play, which, just as half a century ago, became one of the most sought after. Chulpan Khamatova and Kirill Safonov were engaged in leading roles.

This season the performance has dropped out of the repertoire of the theatre due to a sabbatical of the Gittel’s role performer actress Chulpan Khamatova. Then, Galina Volchek proposed Kristina Orbakaite to play the main character. There are three theatrical productions in her background. They are Monday After the Miracle (Ponedelnik posle chuda) (Igroki Theater), The Squire’s Daughter (Baaryshnya-krestyanka) (Ermolova Moscow Drama Theatre, graduation play), and Danae (Estrada Theater).

Volchek’s offer was unexpected for Orbakaite, “I thought that if I refused, then I could not forgive myself for this. On the other hand, I understood and understand what a risk I am taking, and there are a lot of people around me who remind me of this very often (family, friends, colleagues). But it often happens to me: despite my shyness (I might be an indecisive person), sometimes I take such radical steps,” Kristina told in an interview.

Galina Volchek’s co-authors in the play making were art director Pavel Kaplevich, stage director and instructor Mikhail Ali-Hussein, plastique director Tatyana Tarasova, lighting designer Damir Ismagilov, sound director Sofya Kruglikova.

The performance was created with the support of the Alisher Usmanov’s Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation. The Foundation is a general partner of the Moscow Sovremennik Theatre, supporting all the events initiated and held by it.
