Performance for Blind Shown for First Time in Izhevsk

The “Special View” program presented a unique closed-eyes performance titled “White Nights” for blind and visually impaired people at the Second International Paradelphic Games. This form of theatre performance when events are unfolding in complete darkness is something new for Russia. The performance based on sounds, smells, tactile sensations is 100% accessible to blind people. This is an important step towards the development of an inclusive direction of activities, to which the Foundation together with the Program pays special attention.

Moreover, the “Art, Science and Sport” Foundation, as a partner of the Games, presented a special nomination under the “Special View” program aimed at the support of visually impaired people.

The Second International Paradelphic Games, inclusive competitions for disabled people in the area of top achievements in art, took place from November 11 to November 17, 2018 in Izhevsk, the Udmurt Republic.

The Games were held by the National Paradelphic Committee of Russia and the Government of the Udmurt Republic with the support of the “Art, Science and Sport” Foundation and the “Special View” program.

The art competitions included 29 nominations in 8 art forms: musical, visual, audiovisual, theatrical, choreographic and circus art, literature (authorship), and gestural singing.

First, the “closed-eyes theatre” form of performance was successfully tested in 2014 with the project titled “Invisible performances”, which for three years had travelled to more than 20 regions of Russia with performance tours supported by the “Special View” program for visually impaired people.

The program director of the Foundation Maria Melnichenko said, “In November last year during the ‘Exchange of Cultural Projects’ at the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum, we established a Grant in the nomination ‘The Closed-Eyes Theatre’. For several months, we had received more than a hundred applications. The winners were the ‘Sakvoyazh’ Puppet Theatre and the Sochi Concert Philharmonic Association ‘Winter Theatre’. It was decided to stage the performance in two cities simultaneously, in Moscow and in Sochi, and then to go on tour to the regions. The performance presented at the Second Paradelphic Games proves the importance of the inclusive practice of creating works of art for the visually impaired.”

The program of the Games included large-scale opening and closing ceremonies of the Games, a gala concert of the laureates with participation of pop stars and prominent cultural figures, a business program, workshops, master classes, an international conference, music lounges, excursion programs, acknowledgement with works of P.I. Tchaikovsky, the presentation of national culture of the peoples of Russia and other countries.

The Games were held with financing from a grant of the President of the Russian Federation for the development of civil society provided by the Presidential Grants Foundation.
