“A Future with Confidence” Project Organises the “Check-in Under the Sun” Camp during Summer Vacation

13 July 2016

The Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation organised a summer camp for the pupils of children’s social service institutions that took place from 29 June to 12 July 2016, within the framework of the project, “A Future with Confidence.”

The “Check-in Under the Sun” camp was held in one of Russia’s best recreational and educational centres for children and youth, the All-Russian Children’s Centre Smena (‘Change’) in Sukko village (Krasnodar Region).

The summer camp invited leaders from the project, “A Future with Confidence” — 53 school students from 14 institutions in ten Russian regions: Belgorod, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Lipetsk, Moscow, Oryol, Orenburg, the Krasnodar and the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania.

Over a period of two weeks, the children participated in educational, sports, and entertainment programs.

Early in the summer session, the children engaged in team building activities, as well as training on financial literacy and security organised by the School of Business Trainings for Young People.

Afterwards, the participants of “Check-in Under the Sun” had the opportunity to participate in talent development workshops in photo, video, and animation classes taught by the Moscow International Film School, a partner of this summer camp. Instructors and volunteers from the college showed the children how to take pictures, edit photos, shoot videos, and create cartoons. Those who preferred to study in the graffiti workshop decorated the walls of the Smena Centre with a picture featuring the outlines of Russia.

On 7 July, the centre carried out one of the key events of the “Check-in Under the Sun” programme: a meeting with national sports heroes initiated by the National charity project “Olympic Heroes for the Children and Youth of Russia.” The event was organised by the Inter-Regional Public Veterans Committee “Heroes of the Fatherland” and the Russian Union of Athletes. The children were able to meet with the stars of world sport, including the Olympic medalist in academic rowing Anna B. Alyoshina, Olympic handball champion Larisa M. Berkova, double Olympic medalist in athletics Olesya N. Zykina, Olympic volleyball champion Lubov V. Kozyreva, Olympic medalist in academic rowing Galina A. Mishenina, Olympic football medalist Sergey P. Olshansky, Olympic weightlifting champion Alexei A. Petrov, double Olympic volleyball champion Tatyana P. Sarycheva, Olympic champion in cycling Vladimir I. Semenets, and Olympic ice hockey champion Alexander V. Skvortsov.

Preparation for the musical comedy Showpiece and its debut — which took place on 11 July, the final day of the camp — were the high points of the event. During a five-day period, the children were instructed by director Nikita Vlasov and choreographer Stas Alekhin and were initiated into the secrets of the theatrical arts. All 53 participants of “Check-in Under the Sun” participated in the play. The children tried on the roles of actors, make-up artists, costume designers, and decorators.

The “Check-in Under the Sun” camp was a grand finale to the 2015/2016 season.

The project “A Future with Confidence” of The Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation has taken place since 2013. Its aim is to provide social adaptation for children from orphanages and residential schools.
