The Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation became a general partner of the Congress "EMBO Conference on Redox Biology"

The Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation regularly supports projects designed to exchange experience and opinions between specialists of different fields in science and education through the forums, conferences, festivals and other contemporary platforms for professional discussions. The Foundation became a partner of the international congress “EMBO Conference on Redox Biology” that took place in July 2017 for the first time. The main topic of the Congress was the redox biology and a complex process of redox regulation. Scientists, pioneering in redox, namely Keith Carroll from the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, Elena Hidalgo from the Pompeu Fabra University, Joris Messens from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Alexander Galkin from the Queen’s University Belfast participated in the Forum.

James Watson, who is considered to be one of the founders of contemporary biology and genetics, became one of the key speakers of the congress discussing the redox potential in biology. He determined the structure of DNA molecule together with Francis Crick in 1953. Later, he made several fundamental discoveries in molecular biology and supervised the project of mapping the human genome until he had to leave the project because of disagreement with the policy of patenting of genes and specific DNA parts. Apart from participation in the Congress, James Watson gave three public lectures in Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

During the presentation in the Congress, Mr. Watson told that future discoveries of brain function mechanisms will be equivalent to the discovery of the structure of DNA. He believes that technology Crispr/Cas9, that allows to change genomes of higher organisms including humans, is the major breakthrough of the recent years. He also expressed the hope that scientists would prioritise science over patenting. As regards to the question about the fees to get aces to scientific publications, he believes that a free of charge access should be provided for all scientific books and tutorials, and this is currently being implemented in his company.
