7th Mstislav Rostropovich Music Festival

08 December 2014

For the seventh time the annual Mstislav Rostropovich music festival was held in Samara on the 6th and 7th of December 2014 with the support of the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation.

The Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev was traditionally the festival’s centrepiece. The musicians performed three concerts at the Samara Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.

The first day delighted listeners with Classical Symphony № 1 and the symphonic fairy-tale for children Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev. The second day presented “Prelude to The Afternoon of a Faun and Sea by Claude Debussy, the Pictures at an Exhibition suite by Modest Mussorgsky arranged by Maurice Ravel as well as Symphony № 5 by Gustav Mahler.

“The Mstislav Rostropovich festival is not only a tribute to the great musician whose entire career is a leading light for many Russian artists but is also a continuation of his tradition of familiarising listeners with the best classical and contemporary music”, says Valery Gergiev.

The Mstislav Rostropovich Music Festival was organised on the initiative of the artistic director and head of the Mariinsky Theatre Valery Gergiev in 2008. After seven years the festival developed its own unique appearance, character and became an event widely recognised in the world of classical music. The following outstanding musicians took part in the concert program: violist Yuri Bashmet, violinists Anne-Sophie Mutter and Alena Baeva, cellist Tatiana Vasilyeva, pianist and conductor Ignat Solzhenitsyn, pianist Alexander Toradze, soloists from the Mariinsky Theatre Olga Borodina, Anastasia Kalagina, Alexei Markov, Zlata Bulycheva and others. Among the honoured guests were Maya Plisetskaya, Rodion Shchedrin, Natalia Solzhenitsyna and Sofia Gubaidulina.

The Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation is a partner of the Mariinsky Theatre supporting its projects, tours, festivals and other important events.
