“Russian Ice Hockey Legends for the Children of Novotroitsk” Event Held in the Orenburg Region

01 November 2016

The Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation, together with the “Russian Union of Athletes” and “Heroes of the Fatherland” Veterans Committee, held the “Russian Ice Hockey Legends for the Children of Novotroitsk” event on 28-29 October 2016.

Within the framework of the event, Novotroitsk and Orsk were visited by famous Russian hockey players, multiple Olympic champions, and world and European champions, whose names have been recorded in the history of world hockey, including two-time Olympic medalists in hockey Boris Mikhailov and Boris Mayorov, and Olympic medalists in hockey Stanislav Petukhov, Ilya Byakin, Viktor Shalimov, Vasiliy Pervukhin, and Yuri Blinov.

The delegation was headed by President of the Russian Union of Athletes Galina Gorokhova, a three-time Olympic fencing medalist, thirteen-time world champion, twenty-time champion of the USSR, Honored Master of Sports, and Honoured Trainer of the USSR and Russia.

On 28 October, the legendary athletes visited several secondary schools in Novotroitsk and the Orsk Children’s Home, with which the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation closely cooperates in the framework of ‘A Future with Confidence’ social adaptation program.

The invitees talked to the children about Soviet and Russian hockey, including the famous USSR — Canada Super Series 1972, handed out autographs, gave advice to the young athletes, stressed the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and awarded medals and diplomas to the students who had won various competitions.

The event continued in the newly opened Victory Ice Palace of Novotroitsk on 29 October. After the press conference, during which the players gave out awards to the best athletes, coaches, physical education teachers and schoolchildren of the city, the legendary athletes held master classes with younger and elder groups of hockey players from the sports schools of Novotroitsk and Orsk.

“The popularity of hockey is high not only in the Orenburg region but across all of Russia. The main advantage of hockey is that it is a team game in which everyone plays for each other and comes to rescue each other. Thanks to such events as ‘Russian Ice Hockey Legends for the Children of Novotroitsk’, even the youngest players seek to achieve high results,” said Ilya Byakin during the press conference.

“We were here with veterans in the 90s and played hockey. We held friendlies in the street and said that at the least, a roof had to be built. A beautiful ice palace was built recently. Yesterday, we discussed the fact that the palace is full all day round: from 6 AM to 12 PM, plus there is also a night league. We only need conditions, once they are created, a palace is built, maybe even an ice rink somewhere in the yards... I think the kids will be happy to play sports and skate,” said Viktor Shalimov about the popularisation of hockey in provincial towns.

The finale of the “Russian Ice Hockey Legends for the Children of Novotroitsk” event was the “70th Anniversary of Hockey Cup” friendly match, in which one of the honoured athletes played for each team.

A photo and autograph session and a diploma awards ceremony for the young participants, including memorable gifts, was held at the end of the event.

The Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation, together with the “Russian Union of Athletes” and the “Heroes of Fatherland” Committee, has held “Russian Ice Hockey Legends for the Children” events since 2014. Meetings with honoured athletes were organised in Zheleznogorsk (Kursk region) and Stary Oskol (Belgorod region). Famous hockey players also visited Gubkin (Belgorod region) on the invitation of the foundation.
