The IV All-Russian Award “For Fidelity to Science”

On February 6, 2018, on the Day of Russian Science, in the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, a solemn award ceremony was held for the IV All-Russian Award “For Fidelity to Science”. Special attention to the award is paid by the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation, a key priority for which is the popularization of scientific achievements.

The ceremony was hosted by M.O. Potashyov, the master of the game “What? Where? When?”, a four-time winner of the Diamond Owl prize. The awards were given in 10 nominations covering all areas of popularization of the national science achievements. This year, the Art, Science and Sport Foundation, which has been a partner of the award for the third year, established a special prize, Special Look, for a proactive stance in scientific journalism. Alexander Telishev, a press correspondent of International News Agency Russia Today (Rossiya Sevodnya) got the prize in this nomination.

The solemn ceremony was attended by Minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation Olga Yurevna Vasilieva. Olga Yurevna reported that this year more than 300 applications were submitted for participation in the award, “twice as many as last year”.

“It is worth noting that the quality of the works themselves is also steadily improving. This means that the professional community, especially writing journalists, is really interested in the competition. I thank you for doing a great thing — for promotion of Russian science. When ‘portraits’ of scientists appear in your articles, you show that science is not a career, but a way of living,” the minister concluded.

Olga Yurevna emphasized that the fundamental science should remain a guideline for the society.

“We talk a lot about the fact that there should be a strong connection between business and science. In our country, this work continues now; we see a real interest from business, primarily, in applied research. However, I support the thesis that our main task is to provide our future scientists, our schoolchildren with fundamental education, because no applied research is possible without fundamental science,” said O.Yu. Vasilyeva.

The Award For Fidelity to Science was established by the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia in 2015 with the aim of encouraging journalists, scientists and business representatives who made an important contribution to the development of Russian science and its presentation.
