“Sovremennik” as First Theatre to Host “Guide Dog Friendly” Project

On June 28, a workshop was held at the “Sovremennik” theatre under the “Special View” program aimed at the support of visually impaired people in order to prepare the theatre staff to meet and service blind visitors accompanied by guide dogs.

The event was arranged by the “Guide Dog Friendly” project implemented by the Moscow Dog Training Centre “Dogs Help Disabled” and the “Special Look” program of the “Art, Science and Sport” Foundation. The organizers showed and told how to meet such unusual visitors and how to create an accessible and friendly environment for owners of guide dogs.

Today, not all organizations are ready to welcome blind people accompanied by four-legged assistants, despite the legislative requirements, so workshops of this king allow administrative staff of theatres to get prepared for meeting blind people accompanied by guide dos.

Experts from the dog training centre introduced Deya, a future guide dog, to the theatre staff. With her help, a dog trainer demonstrated the skills of guide dogs, spoke about the specifics of communication with them and their owners, and told about nuances of handling objections of other spectators.

Ksenia Dmitrieva, the Head of “Special View” program, emphasized the relevance of such events, “Today, visually impaired people, especially young, are actively involved in social life. They go to theatres, cinema, and do sports. Our common task is to help them in this process and provide all possible assistance. Unfortunately, the ignorance by ordinary people of elementary norms and rules of communication with a person with special needs, false stereotypes do not contribute to the progress on this way. Therefore, it is so important to arrange events of this kind aimed at explaining to people the features of communication with the blind, answering their questions and unveiling myths.”

As part of the “Guide Dog Friendly” project and the “Special View” program, a series of events are to be held for all interested people in Moscow and the regions of Russia.

The “Art, Science and Sport” Foundation pays great attention to the inclusive direction in culture. As part of the “Special Look” program aimed at the support of visually impaired people, grants are provided for creation of inclusive theatrical productions, development of audio description system and barrier-free environment for blind and visually impaired people in Russia. In addition, the “Special View” program provides for implementation of ophthalmologic innovations and provision of targeted ophthalmologic care.
