The play Fear. Love. Despair of the Maly Drama Theatre – the Theatre of Europe under the direction of Lev Dodin received the Golden Mask
The Golden Mask-2018 theatre awards ceremony was held at the New Stage of the Bolshoi Theater. “Thank you for the Mask. We worked for quite a long time, hard and honestly,” Lev Dodin, director of the production, said from the stage. “I thanks all the participants of the performance”.
The play Fear. Love. Despair was based on the plays of Bertolt Brecht. Each of the actors seemed to be talking directly to the audience, which was the main interlocutor for them, the opponent in an imaginary dispute, and a casual listener you can share the most intimate matters with. Human emotions and feelings were the main thing at the stage. People are sitting at tables on the sidewalk. It is raining. The history is well on the way behind the scenes. All the main values: compassion, generosity, loyalty are shattering into pieces like old-fashioned crystal glass. Only fear mixed with bitter irony fills the space of the stage and the hall, plunging all viewers in the utter darkness, making them participate in the thinking process at the same time. Thus, Fear. Love. Despair is the quintessence of human feelings and emotions. It is a collective image of an ordinary person, even of a whole country, where people still fear, despair, and love.
The performance was created with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation having long-term partnership with the theatre.
The Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation has been supporting the Maly Drama Theatre — the Theatre of Europe since 2006. The partnership began with creation of the play King Lear by William Shakespeare, which received the Golden Mask and the Golden Sofit awards, and in 2007 a unique three-year project “The Legendary Performances of the Maly Drama Theatre — the Theatre of Europe in Russian Cities” was launched.
