Order of Merit of the Italian Republic Awarded to the Founder of the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation Alisher Usmanov

10 March 2017

Italian President Sergio Mattarella has awarded the Russian businessmen and Founder of the Art, Science and Sport Charity foundation Alisher Usmanov the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, Commander (3rd) Class.

The honour was conferred for contributions to the development of Russian-Italian relations and in recognition of A. B. Usmanov’s participation in the restoration projects of the Berg Villa in Moscow, the residence of the Italian Embassy; the restoration of the Horatii and Curiatii Halls in the Capitoline Museums; and the nave of the Ulpia Basilica, the Dioscuri Fountain on Quirinale Square, and Trajan’s Forum in Rome.

The Order of Merit of the Italian Republic is the highest ranking honour in Italy. It is awarded for meritorious acts made for the nation in literature, the arts, economy, philanthropy, and social and humanitarian activities. The honour is also awarded to civil and military servants for exceptional deeds.

As a true admirer of Italian art, A.B. Usmanov has—for many years—supported projects directed at developing Russian-Italian dialogue and the exchange of cultural values between the two countries.

In October 2014, the Italian-Russian production of Andrei Konchalovsky’s Oedipus at Colonus premiered at the Teatro Olimpico in the Italian city of Vicenze; the film was produced with the support of the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation.

In June 2015, at the State Kremlin Palace, the concert of the legendary Renzo Arbore L’Orchestra Italiana took place in support of the EXPO 2015 universal exposition in Milan. The concert was organized by the Italian Embassy with the support of the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation.

In September-October 2016, the Italian city of Cremona—the world capital of violin making—hosted the Stradivari Music Festival with the support of the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation. A concert by one of the greatest contemporary violinists, Vadim Repin, took place as part of the festival. Playing a 1733 violin by Antonio Stradivari, the Russian musician together with pianist Andrei Korobeynikov performed the best works of Claude Debussy, Sergei Prokofiev, Igor Stravinsky, and Pyotr Tchaikovsky.

The Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation was also the partner of a grand exhibition of Italian artwork in 2012, tied to the 100th anniversary of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.

From 25 November 2016 to 19 February 2017, the ‘ROMA AETERNA. Masterpieces of the Vatican Pinacotheca. Bellini, Raphael, Caravaggio’ exhibition took place at the State Tretyakov Gallery. It was made possible through the personal support of A.B. Usmanov. Never before had the collection of the Vatican Pinacotheca been represented so extensively in an exhibition abroad—with 42 masterpieces in total.

Projects that were implemented with the personal involvement of A.B.Usmanov in recent years have become important events in the cultural life of Russia and Italy.
