Moscow Sovremennik Theatre Tours Kursk and Belgorod Regions

28 April 2016

The Moscow Sovremennik Theatre, under the guidance of legendary theatre director, Galina Volchek, toured the regions of Kursk and Belgorod between 21–24 April 2016 with the support of the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation, presenting their performance of Lyudmila Ulitskaya’s play “Let’s Dance...”

A performance took place on April 21 at the Mikhailovsky GOK Centre of Culture and Technology in Zheleznogorsk, region of Kursk. The theatre then visited two cities in the region of Belgorod performing in the “Komsomolets”, the Culture Centre in Stary Oskol on 23 April and then putting on the play at the “Forum”, the Culture Centre in Gubkin on 24 April.

“Let’s Dance...” is based on “Women of Russian Villages”, a story by Lyudmila Ulitskaya. The second and final part of the work was written specifically for the Sovremennik Theatre. The life story of three friends, Margot, Vera and Emma is brought to life on stage by actresses Daria Frolova, Inna Timofeeva and Yanina Romanova. After a long separation the friends meet in New York and spend the night in a heart-to-heart conversation, remembering their life in Russia and sharing their innermost thoughts. A common and at the same time deep storyline praises the uneclipsed value of love and respect for each other in simple examples from daily life familiar to all of us. “Ulitskaya elevated this love story high into the sky, into the cosmos, into eternity” said Inna Timofeeva sharing her feelings about the final part of the play.

Andzhey Buben directed the staging enforcing it with a number of interesting solutions, hints and half-tones, revealing more drastically the characters’ inner worlds.

The premiere of “Let’s Dance...” took place less than a year ago. The warm reception it got in Moscow was the main motive for choosing the show for touring.

This is the second Sovremennik tour in the Kursk and Belgorod regions organised by the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation. In June 2015 the Sovremennik brought Soviet playwright Alexander Volodin’s “Five Evenings” play to Zheleznogorsk, Stary Oskol and Gubkin.

“I was very pleased talking to my colleagues a year ago, after their return from the Belgorod and Kursk regional tour. We talked about the amazing people, the wonderful reception and the special warmth felt by all actors,” said the theatre’s artistic director Galina Volchek.

The Moscow Sovremennik Theatre is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2016. As a general partner of the theatre since 2013, the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation supports all of its activities.
