Sovremennik Theatre Goes on Tour to Orsk and Novotroitsk

01 July 2016

On June 28 and 29, the Moscow Sovremennik theatre led by director Galina Volchek — with the support of the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation — went on a tour to the cities of Orsk and Novotroitsk.

The legendary theatre has brought its play, “Happy New...”, to the two cities — it is a New Year’s comedy by Rodion Ovchinnikov, and was first staged by the theatre back in 2010. The play has returned to the playbill in 2015 with a new cast. People’s artists of Russia Sergei Garmash and Igor Sklyar perform the leading roles. The play is based around an encounter by two former theatre institute course mates, occurring under strange circumstances: on a staircase one hour before midnight on New Year’s Eve. At a festive table, set up next to the lifts by Igor Sklyar’s hero, a joyful and sincere conversation starts.

“Theatre goers are so ready to go along to tours by big theatres, they cheer every new hero on stage. It is somewhat of an old and forgotten theatre with a forgotten attitude. You never see this kind of attention in Moscow. Nor in Chelyabinsk and Yekaterinburg either. That is why, we’re not only glad to be invited by the Foundation on tour, but to come here in particular gave us additional pleasure”, said Sergei Garmash.

The theatre has already been to Novotroitsk at the invitation of the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation in 2014 — the spectators saw the play “Five Evenings”, where the lead role was also performed by People’s artist of Russia, Sergei Garmash.

Residents of Orsk and Orsk State Drama Theatre were seeing the Sovremennik theatre for the first time.

The Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation is the title partner of Sovremennik theatre and supports many of its events.
