22nd "Stars of the White Nights” Music Festival

09 September 2014

From May 28 to July 31, 2014 the 22nd “Stars of the White Nights” Music Festival organised by Valery Gergiev was held in St. Petersburg on seven different stages at the Mariinsky Theatre with the support of The Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation.

The festival opened with the premiere of the five-hour opera, “Les Troyens”, by Hector Berlioz, an epic, monumental work directed by Yannis Kokkos. Another ambitious production in terms of its message, technical and creative resources was a festival opera premiere of “War and Peace” by Sergei Prokofiev directed by British director Graham Vick.

Within the framework of the festival on the Mariinsky Theatre’s second stage, Richard Wagner’s tetralogy “Der Ring des Nibelungen” was performed under the direction of Valery Gergiev. The Mariinsky Theatre has been and still is the only Russian theatre, where you can hear and see the entirety of this great opera.

For the first time theatre dramas were included in the “Stars of the White Nights” programme: The Chekhov Art Theatre in Moscow put on a performance of a play called “The Little Humpbacked Horse”.

The baroque ensemble “Les Arts Florissants”, one of the most famous bands of this genre, were special guests at the festival, as well as Teatro Regio of Turin which brought over “Requiem” by G. Verdi as well as the world’s leading instrumentalists and opera stars.

During the short 65 days of the festival there were 113 performances (58 operas and 55 ballets) and 80 concerts of chamber and symphonic music with the participation of guest artists, opera singers and ballet dancers and the Mariinsky Theatre’s chorus and orchestra.

The Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation is a partner of the Mariinsky Theatre and supports it in all its activities.
