02 December 2014

From 13 to 26 November 2014, the Anapa Federal Children’s Centre “Smena”, one of the best children’s and youth recreational and educational centres in Russia, held the “IT Start” workshop for orphans, organised by the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs with support from the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation.

The event was attended by foster children from residential schools and children’s homes interested in the field of information technology. Taking part were more than 70 children from 13 institutions in the regions of Belgorod, Vologda, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Lipetsk, Moscow and Oryol that are in cooperation with the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation.

The main objective of the programme was to involve children in scientific and technical creativity, early career guidance and to provide equal access to advanced technology.

For two weeks the attendees participated in IT master classes, lectures and business games, as well as getting practical training in project management, all of which helped to develop their leadership and teamwork skills.

The children were also involved in various recreational activities: fun runs, beach walks, creative competitions, physical exercise and discos. The participants of the workshop of historical dance even prepared their own performance for the closing ceremony of the project. The excursion to a dolphinarium became unforgettable.

On the final day, a panel of experts judged the children’s projects. Throughout the process the children had to teach themselves not just to think up ideas for presentations but also how to create and perform them in front of an audience. The creators of the best projects received prizes such as tablets and smartphones.
