Uncle Vanya performed by St Petersburg Maly Drama Theatre in Gubkin

18 June 2015

On June 14, 2015 the Academic Maly Drama Theatre — Theatre of Europe directed by Lev Dodin with the support of the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation performed Uncle Vanya in Gubkin, in the region of Belgorod. Their performance of the play has already received the Golden Sofit Theatre Award, Golden Mask National Theatre Award (Best Director — L. Dodin, Best Actor — S. Kuryshev) and the Association of Italian Theatre Critics’ Award.

Uncle Vanya is one of the most famous and popular plays by Anton Chekhov. The play directed by legendary director, Lev Dodin, opens new possibilities in bringing to life classic plays in a modern theatre. It is a rare example of genuine Russian psychological theatre with brilliant performances by actors as well as wonderful, delicate and austere classic set design by brilliant theatre designer, David Borovsky, whose pastel strokes brought the atmosphere of Chekhov’s play to life.

The play was performed by Natalya Akimova, Vera Bykova, Igor Ivanov, Sergei Kuryshev, Alexander Koshkarev, Irina Tychinina, Oleg Ryazantsev, Petr Semak and Ekaterina Tarasova.

On June 13, 2015 the MDT visited Stary Oskol, where the theatre performed Three Sisters. From the Belgorod region the theatre headed to the region of Kursk, where Zheleznogorsk residents were also able to catch Three Sisters.

The current tour is a continuation of a programme of the St. Petersburg Maly Drama Theatre — Theatre of Europe designed to restore touring ties between the cities of Russia. The project was launched eight years ago and to the present day is supported entirely by the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation.
