The Cherry Orchard at the St. Petersburg Maly Drama Theatre

08 July 2014

In spring 2014, the St. Petersburg Academic Maly Drama Theatre — Theatre of Europe (MDT) performed their premiere of the Cherry Orchard. The scenic composition and staging were undertaken by People’s Artist of Russia, winner of numerous state prizes, famous theatre director and MDT Artistic Director, Lev Dodin. The play was put on with the support of the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation.

The stage director is approaching Cherry Orchard for the second time. The first performance was staged 20 years ago, in 1994. This performance is the stage director’s new vision of Chekhov’s play.

“This material has excited me all my life. Time has changed things, and an internal necessity for a new reading of the play, a search for new meanings, has arisen”, said Mr. Dodin.

The backdrop of the new Cherry Orchard interpretation was created by artist, Alexander Borovsky. The action is not limited to the stage. The heroes live and walk among the viewers who, once they enter the hall, find themselves inside the manor house environment, appropriate to the epoch and become an important part of the play.

The main roles are played by: Kseniya Rappoport as Ranevskaya, Danila Kozlovsky as Lopakhin, Elizaveta Boyarskaya as Varya, Ekaterina Tarasova as Anya, Igor Chernevich as Gaev, and Alexander Zavyalov as Fiers. The role of Charlotte is played by Tatiana Shestakova who played as Ranevskaya during the first performance.

The Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation supports many of the St. Petersburg Maly Drama Theatre’s projects.
